At a glance
- House pet African pygmy hedgehogs individually.
- Choose a solid floor and prevent climbing falls or escape.
- Measure temperature where the hedgehog actually lives.
Measure the main floor
A hedgehog needs usable space for walking, a wheel, a sleeping hide, and food and water. A tall enclosure with a small base does not solve that problem. Draw the furnishings to scale before choosing the home so the remaining floor does not become a narrow obstacle course.
VCA gives 2 ft × 3 ft (61 × 91 cm) as a minimum floor-space reference, with larger housing offering more room. Treat this as a starting point for one hedgehog. African pygmy hedgehogs should generally have individual enclosures; extra floor space is not a reason to make unfamiliar adults share.
Choose safe construction
| Part | What to check |
|---|---|
| Floor | Solid, comfortable, and easy to keep dry. |
| Walls and lid | Escape-resistant, with secure closures and no dangerous climbing route. |
| Ventilation | Fresh air without draughts or a sealed, stuffy box. |
| Edges and gaps | No sharp fittings or places that can trap a foot or head. |
| Access | Room to remove the wheel and clean every corner. |
Avoid exposed wire floors and unprotected raised levels. Hedgehogs can climb into situations they cannot safely climb down from. A home that works for an adult must also be checked for gaps if a smaller youngster will use it.

Manage temperature deliberately
Use a reliable thermometer at living level and monitor changes through the day. VCA describes an environmental range of 70–85°F (21–29°C), while warning about chilling and overheating. Do not aim for either extreme or assume the room thermostat measures the cage accurately.
If extra heat is needed, use a purpose-appropriate setup with compatible thermostatic control and advice from an experienced veterinarian. Keep electrical parts outside reach and prevent contact burns. Test the empty enclosure over several day-and-night cycles before use.
Do not treat a chilled, poorly responsive pet hedgehog as normally hibernating. Seek urgent veterinary advice and follow instructions for safe warming.
Add the essentials and keep them clean
- A sheltered sleeping area with safe, clean bedding.
- A stable solid-surface exercise wheel that fits the animal.
- Reliable food and water containers in reachable positions.
- Open floor space and simple safe enrichment.
Remove faeces, wet bedding, and leftover food daily. Check the wheel closely because it can become soiled during nighttime use. Wash furnishings and the enclosure regularly, rinse thoroughly, and dry them before replacing bedding. Avoid loose fabric loops and threads that can catch toes.
Common questions
Can two hedgehogs share if the cage is large?
Individual housing is the usual recommendation for African pygmy hedgehogs. Space does not eliminate fighting or unwanted breeding.
Can I use a multilevel small-animal cage?
Only if the main floor is adequate and any elevated areas cannot cause falls or entrapment. A simpler single-level layout is often easier to make safe.
